Congratulations to our WYSE team. St. Teresa students earned first place at Richland Community College Regional on February 6. WYSE is an academic competition sponsored by the University of Illinois, School of Engineering and stands for Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering.
We are especially proud of the students that earned one of the top 3 scores in their division.
Cailin Jerger 2nd in Biology and 2nd in Chemistry
Minho Cho 3rd in Mathematics and 2nd in Physics
Samuel Kenzeman 3rd in Mathematics
Chris Miller 2nd in Engineering Graphics
Femi Oladipupo 1st in Chemistry and 1st in Mathematics
Madison Velchek 2nd in Chemistry
McKenna Wilson 3rd in English
The team qualified to compete next month at Eastern Illinois University Sectional. In 2010 and 2011 St. Teresa finished 2nd each year at Eastern Illinois and advanced to the state competition where they finished 11th in 2010 and 12th in 2011.
Commenting on the number of students that earned high scores, St. Teresa’s coach Paul Furman said, “This is not a competition where one or two outstanding students can dominate the scoring. A team consists of fourteen students, with each student taking an exam in two subjects. The schools that do the best have enough talented students to spread their scoring to all the subjects. We had seven students with one of the top three scores in their subject. That is an outstanding accomplishment, and demonstrates that our students are receiving a quality education.”
