The Music Department
Choir
This ensemble is designed to expose students to a variety of choral music. We will study several different time peridos as well as at least one other language. This group also plans and provides music for all of the school masses. Performances include fall and spring concerts, festivals, IMEA and Solo and Ensemble.
Concert Band
This ensemble provides students with the opportunity to improve their instrumental abilities in a variety of difficult venues. Performances include fall and spring concerts, festivals and home sporting events. Students also have the opportunity to compete individually through IMEA and Solo and Ensemble. Members of this ensemble also participate in marching band unless permission is obtained from the instructor.
Jazz Band
Students enrolled in Jazz Band will have the opportunity to explore many forms of jazz, from swing to Latin to ballads. Improvisation is a major jazz skill addressed in this course. Performances include fall and spring concerts, festivals and competitions. Students in Jazz Band must also be in Concert Band unless permission is obtained from the instructor.
Music Appreciation
Students enrolled in Music Appreciation will be exposed to various types of music from the Renaissance Period to the Contemporary Period. Various forms and styles of music are also explored to help enable students to form intelligent musical opinions and to develop their own musical likes and dislikes. Students are introduced to basic musical notation, form, and instrumentation. Both vocal and instrumental styles of music are explored. The course concludes with a unit on music history and a study of many great composers. Grades are determined by unit exam, semester project, and the semester exam.
String Ensemble
Students involved in String Ensemble will have the opportunity to play music from several different styles and composers. Small ensemble playing will be a major component of this class. Performances include fall and spring concerts, IMEA, Solo and Ensemble.
