Financial Aid/Scholarships

Sources of Financial Assistance Program are designed to offer assistance to all current and prospective students who want to attend St. Teresa High School, but cannot afford to do so without some financial help. The Program includes both direct grants and various scholarship programs. It is the intent of the program to share the cost of education with the student and his family. Financial assistance is not given for athletic purposes.

Julius L. Burtschi Memorial Scholarship
In September of 1989, Mary F. Bretz endowed a $100,000 scholarship fund in the St. Teresa Educational Foundation in memory of her father, Julius L. Burtschi. Students with the highest scholastic ranking from each of the Catholic grade schools in Decatur are eligible for consideration. Students with a similar ranking from the eighth grade of any other school can also be considered for nomination. The principal and faculty from the grade schools may nominate. A committee of three, the principal of St. Teresa, a director from the St. Teresa Educational Foundation, and a representative from the faculty of St. Teresa shall select the candidate. The candidate selected will receive a scholarship to St. Teresa. The selected candidate will be eligible to retain the award for all four years, provided that certain conditions are met.

Darrell and Ursula Beck Family Scholarship Fund
In January of 1997, Darrell and Ursula Beck established a $180,000 trust fund in the St. Teresa Educational Foundation. Eighty (80) percent of the income from the fund is to be disbursed to the school and used by the school to pay the tuition or a portion of the tuition of students in financial need. The funds from this scholarship are to be distributed at the discretion of the principal.

Michael Schrader Memorial Trust
In 1986, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Schnepp established a scholarship trust fund in memory of their son, Michael Anthony Schrader. The $50,000 trust is to provide benefits for a needy student or students who want to attend St. Teresa High School. The funds of the scholarship are to be distributed at the discretion of the principal through the Direct Grant program.

Jan and Mark Barmann Scholarship Fund
In 1993, Jan and Mark Barmann established this scholarship for those who were in need of financial assistance to attend St. Teresa. This trust fund of $25,000 was placed in the St. Teresa Educational Foundation. The funds of the scholarship are to be distributed at the discretion of the principal through the Direct Grant program.

Wesley and Agnes Collins Scholarship Fund
In 1991, Mark and Jan Barmann established a $25,000 trust fund in the St. Teresa Educational Foundation in memory of Mark's aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Collins. It is the request of the donors that recipients will be selected based upon need. The funds of the scholarship are to be distributed at the discretion of the principal through the Direct Grant program.

Mary C. Schaniel Scholarship Fund
In December of 1996, the estate of Mary C. Schaniel established a $25,000 trust fund in the St. Teresa Educational Foundation. The funds of the scholarship are to be distributed at the discretion of the principal through the Direct Grant program.

Sister M. Clotilde O'Reilly, O.S.U. Scholarship Fund
Sister Clotilde O'Reilly, O.S.U., who died on April 22, 1994, was the very fabric of St. Teresa for almost half a century. She served St. Teresa as a teacher, counselor, principal, and alumni director. Alumni and friends of Sr. Clotilde established this fund. The funds from this scholarship are to be distributed at the discretion of the principal through the Direct Grant program.

Larry and Sara Cunningham Scholarship Fund
In 1989, Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham established a $5,000 scholarship in the St. Teresa Educational Foundation. This fund was established for minority students. Applicants will submit their request to the principal. According to the terms of the trust, the principal will select the candidate/s for the Larry and Sara Cunningham Scholarship.

Ethel L. Payton Scholarship Fund
In August of 2000, the estate of Ethel L. Payton established a $35,000 trust fund in the St. Teresa Educational Foundation. According to the wishes of Mrs. Payton, the monies received from this fund are to be used for scholarships for students in need. The funds from these scholarships are to be distributed at the discretion of the principal through the Direct Grant Program.

Clarence I. and Theresa K. Flemming Scholarship Fund
In May of 2000, the family of Clarence and Theresa Flemming established a $100,000 trust fund in the St. Teresa Educational Foundation. To be eligible for the Clarence I. and Theresa K. Flemming Scholarship, the student must demonstrate financial need and have a strong desire for academic achievement at St. Teresa High School. Those wishing to apply for scholarship funds from this trust can obtain from the Main Office at St. Teresa.

Jonathan Madding Scholarship Fund
In May of 2000, the family of Jonathan Madding established a $100,000 trust fund in his honor in the St. Teresa Educational Foundation. To be eligible for the Jonathan Madding Scholarship, the student must demonstrate financial need and have a strong desire for academic achievement at St. Teresa High School. Those wishing to apply for scholarship funds from this trust can obtain information from the Main Office at St. Teresa.

Dorothy Mae McCoy Scholarship and Ursula Beck Memorial Scholarship
These two new scholarship began in 2005 through the Decatur Community Foundation. Contact the school for more information.

Direct Grant Program
To be eligible for assistance, a student must demonstrate financial need and have serious interest in St. Teresa. To ensure impartiality and sensitivity to privacy, the school employs the Private School Aid Service to secure all confidential information. Parents must complete the Student Aid Form and mail it with the fee to the Private School Aid Service. Awarded grants will be applied only to the tuition of the grantee. Every effort will be made to award some financial assistance to all eligible candidates. Students may be eligible for a grant for each of their years at St. Teresa. However, the student must apply each year. No awards will be automatically renewed. The Direct Grant program is funded by the St. Teresa Board of Directors and the preceding funds.

The Process for Direct Grants
  • Applications for Financial Assistance are available in the Main Office after February 15.
  • This confidential Student Aid Form is sent by the Parents/Guardians to Private School Aid Service in Ohio by April 15.
  • The principal of St. Teresa reviews the recommendations of the Private School Aid Service.
  • Parents of the Direct Grant or Scholarship recipients will be informed no later than June 15 preceding the academic year of the award.
  • All are given consideration based on funds available.
  • Financial assistance is always partial.
  • Financial assistance is not given for athletic purposes.

  • Knights of Columbus 4th Degree - Please contact the K of C. They determine who will receive scholarship help.
