From the Herald & Review

DECATUR — A pair of local players have decided to stay home and try to rebuild the Millikin men’s soc-cer program.

Big Blue soccer coach Chad Jones announced that Connor Smith of St. Teresa and Jeffrey Grimes of Olney East Richland plan to play at Millikin next season.

Smith earned four letters at St. Teresa where he played midfielder, defender and goalie. As a junior, he scored five times and recorded 14 assists en route to being named the team’s most valuable player. Last season, he scored six times with 16 assists and was named to the Herald & Review All-Area first team.

“Connor has grown up around our program and I am excited to add a solid local player to our program,” Jones said. “Connor is technically sound and makes good decisions.”

Grimes, also a four-year ltter winner, scored 18 goals as a senior to go with seven assists as a midfielder. The Apollo Conference pick was named to the All-Area second team.

“Jeff will be a good piece to the puzzle in helping us build our program,” Jones said.

Millikin is looking to rebound from an 0-17 season in Jones’ first season as head coach. Opponents scored 2.88 goals per game.
