St. Teresa junior Ann Duncan enjoyed the Bulldogs’ regional title run last year, but coming off a broken foot, felt a little like she was just along for the ride.
This year, Duncan is healthy and one of the main reasons St. Teresa (17-11) is playing in the Class 2A St. Joseph-Ogden Sectional semifinal tonight against Champaign St. Thomas More (25-5).
“I was out of shape last year and not at full strength with my foot, so this feels pretty good,” said Duncan, who is second on the team in scoring at 14.4 points per game. “I’m just glad I stayed healthy this year.”
With all the scoring lost from last year’s team, including H&R All-Macon County first team selection Holly Haskins (16.2 points per game), the Bulldogs needed to find offense this year and both Duncan and senior guard Erin Hettinger have provided it.

Congratulations to our WYSE team. St. Teresa students earned a third place trophy at Richland Community College on February 1. WYSE is an academic competition sponsored by the University of Illinois, School of Engineering and stands for Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering. St. Teresa competes in the division for schools with enrollments of 300 to 700 students even though our enrollment is 288.
We are especially proud of the students that earned one of the top 5 scores in the division.
Blake Allison 5th Chemistry and 4th Math
Tim Furman 4th Biology
Grace McCormack 3rd English
Michael Miller 2nd English and 3rd Math
Ryan Moody 5th Physics
Connor Pearson 4th Math and 4th Physics
Claire Raycraft 5th Biology and 2nd Chemistry
Gretchen Vandercar 5th Math
Allison Bate 5th Biology
Cailin Jerger 2nd Biology
Sylvia Kim 4th Physics
Clarissa Lewis 5th Math
David Yung 1st Physics
Since they had one of the top two scores, David Yung, Cailin Jerger, Claire Raycraft, and Michael Miller have qualified to compete next month at Eastern Illinois University in the second round of competition. Good luck to these students!
Asked about competing in a division with larger schools, coach Paul Furman said, “In previous years we have competed in the division for schools with enrollments under 300. However, our students don’t even give it a second thought. They know that they will be competing against students from schools of all sizes when they are in college and in the job market. I think it is a credit to all of them to have such a mature attitude.”
Commenting on the number of students that earned high scores, Furman said, “A team consists of fourteen students, with each student taking two exams. The schools that do the best have several students scoring above average. Thirteen of our students had at least one score in the top five. That is an outstanding accomplishment, and demonstrates that our students are receiving a quality education.”
