The Business Department
Computer Concepts:
This is a one-semester course
designed
to introduce students to using computers. The class consists of nine
weeks
of keyboarding where students will learn proper keyboarding technique.
The second nine weeks will be an introduction to word processing and spreadsheets.
Keyboarding
II:
This course is a one-semester
course
designed to improve the students keyboarding skills. Emphasis is placed
on the development of keyboarding speed and document formatting. Basic
word processing skills will be taught along with proper formatting of
letters,
reports, and tables.
Prerequisite: Computer Concepts.
Advanced Microsoft Office
This is a one-semester course
designed
to build advanced skills using Microsoft Office. An emphasis will be placed on both Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access.
Prerequisite: Computer Concepts.
Web
Page Design I
In this one-semester course,
students
will learn internet basics as well as designing, maintaining, and
updating
a personal webpage using Dreamweaver.
Prerequisite: Computer Concepts.
Web
Page Design II
In this one-semester course,
students
will maintain and update the St. Teresa webpage. It will be a project
based
class where students will work on updates as requested by St. Teresa
Adminisgtration, Faculty, and Staff.
Prerequisite: A grade of B or
above in Web Page Design I
and approval of instructor.
Introduction
to Business
This one-semester course is
designed
to provide students with an understanding of our private enterprise
system
and our relationship to it as citizens, consumers, and workers. Topics
covered include types of economic systems, different business
organizations,
banking, credit, and investments. This course may be used for Consumer
Education Credit.
One-semester course, open to
Sophomores.
Consumer
Education
This survey course is designed
to help a student become an effective consumer by intelligently
managing
his personal and economic affairs. Some of the topics covered include
budgeting,
banking, credit, insurances and taxes.
Required Course.
Accounting
This course is designed to teach accounting principles and how they are effected by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Areas of focus:
- The six type of accounts and their normal balances.
- The two accounting equations.
- How to prepare and utilize a trial balance
- Create an Income Statement.
- Create a Statement of Owner's Equity.
- Create a Balance Sheet
Full-year course, open to juniors
and seniors.
Marketing
Through a study of Marketing,
students
learn about the forces of marketing that operate in our market-oriented
economy.Analysis of recent changes and trends in distributing goods and
services is made in addition to an in-depth study of retail and
wholesale
markets.
One-semester course, open tojuniors and seniors.
Business
Law
This introduction course focuses
on the development of law in the U.S. and its importance to society.
Law
and the minor, and the various aspects of contract law are highlighted.
Review of actual case problems, mastery of legal terminology and
developing
the ability to think through legal problems analytically and
systematically
is emphasized.
One-semester course, open to
juniors
and seniors.
Entrepreneuship I
Exploration of the creative processes of business ownership, helping students to identify their own creative problem solving styles. Students will develop innovative solutions to a wide range of business problems that center on new product, service, and process development. Emphasis will be placed on both individual creativity in teams in a work context. Fundamentals of writing and implementing competent business plans will be introduced.
Prerequisite: Junior or Senior.
Entrepreneurship II
Designed to develop the skills necessary to run a business on a daily basis, focusing on control, personnel management, customer relation skills, sales and promotion, and display and design functions outside of regular school hours.
Prerequesite: Junior or Senior standing and a grade of 'A' of 'B' in Entrepreneurship I.
Office Aide
Office aides are chosen for one
semester at a time and will be given 1/2 credit per semester.
During this period, the office aide will develop valuable clerical
skills working in a variety of administrative offices. Only those
students who have proven themselves to be responsible will be chosen as
office aides due to the sensitive nature of occurrences that the
student is likely to encounter while working in the office.
Prerequisite: Computer Concepts and minimum overall "C" average
in academic courses. Required to submit letter of interest.
Semester course offered to juniors and seniors.
