World Language
Spanish I
An introduction to the
languageand the culture of the Spanish people with emphasis on grammatical
structures,verb usage, pronunciation and communication skills through conversations,
and the use of videos and films.
Spanish II
This is a continuation of
Spanish
I with stress on grammar usage, pronunciation, verb usage and the
cultural
aspects of Spain and Latin America and their contrasts to our native
culture.
Provides the students with necessary grammar and vocabulary background
to carry on a basic conversation in this language. Further usage of
this
language includes conversation, use of idiomatic phrases and use of
videos
and films. Pronunciation and oral skill comprehension are emphasized.
Spanish III
Further and more in-depth
study
of the language. Grammatical structures are reviewed through oral
skills.
Vocabulary building and cultural studies are emphasized through
reading,
writing, and speaking the language. Pronunciation and oral/proficiency
skills are heavily emphasized through conversation, and through
continued
activities that are mentioned in Spanish II and I. Comparisons of
diverse
cultural systems of Spain, Latin America and the U.S. are explored.
Spanish IV
An in-depth study of
language
in all areas; grammar, literature, and cultural studies. Skills
stressed
are oral and written proficiency with reading comprehension important.
In-depth study of authors and literature are presented throughout the
year.
Intense conversation and grammar usage in oral work is stressed.
Cultural
aspects of the Latin American, Hispanic world and the Iberian Peninsula
are compared and contrasted to the culture of the U.S.
French I
Through reading, writing,
and
oral/aural practice, students gain ability in pronunciation, basic
conversation,
fundamental grammar principles and vocabulary usage. Memorization of
verbs
is basic to conversation practice. Through informal discussion,
students gain knowledge of French
culture and civilization. Students are helped to communicate in the
target language and develop an appreciation of a foreign culture.
French II
More complex sentence
structures
are emphasized, incorporating more verb tenses. Dialogues for
conversation
are generally more lengthy than in French I. Cultural units of study
include
such topics as driving in France. Students are encouraged to build
vocabulary,
make use of more sophisticated grammatical structures, and communicate
more in oral French.
French III
New grammatical
principles
are incorporated in more literary readings. Students will learn about
French
customs and foods. Oral communication is encouraged.
French IV
More sophisticated
grammatical concepts are studied in French IV. Throughout the
year we will also study popular French authors.
Pre-requisite: French III.
