Music

Chorus
Students enrolled in Choir will have the opportunity to improve both their vocal and performing skills as well as increase their own musical repertoire by both singing and listening to various styles of music. Students are exposed to both contemporary and traditional music composed for chorus. Proper use of the voice and sight singing are stressed. Students are expected to sing in two or three parts. Grades are determined by attendance at performances, increased vocal skill, behavior, and willingness to contribute to the organization in a positive manner. Students will also enjoy the experience of inter-school competition.

Concert Band
Students enrolled in Concert Band will have the opportunity to improve instrumental performance skills and understanding of concert band music by studying and playing various compositions. Performances include fall and spring concerts, festivals and home varsity games. Grades are determined by improvement, attitude, and attendance at performances.

Honor Band
This weighted course emphasizes individual development at a high level of musicianship; it requires additional preparation for ensemble and solo contests.

Jazz Band
Students enrolled in Jazz Band will study and perform various styles of jazz from Dixieland to Contemporary. Performances include fall and spring concerts, festivals, competitions, and some home varsity games. Grades are determined by improvement, attitude, and attendance at performances. Students in Jazz Band must also be in Concert Band unless permission is given by the instructor.

Rock Band – (No Credit)
Selected music students are invited to explore their musical talents and perform for various events for the community and/or school functions. Students are accepted based on musical talent and skills.

Music Appreciation
Students enrolled in Music Appreciation will be exposed to various types of music from the Renaissance Period to the Contemporary Period. Various forms and styles of music are also explored to help enable students to form intelligent musical opinions and to develop their own musical likes and dislikes.

String Ensemble
Students involved in String Ensemble will have the opportunity to play music from several different styles and composers. Small ensemble playing will be a major component of this class. Performances include fall and spring concerts, IMEA, Solo and Ensemble Contests.
